Jan 4, Nanny's birthday

Sitting here watching Clemson play WV at Orange Bowl, at 2nd quarter WV is winning 28-17. I just saw the best play I haveever seen, Clemson guy was down almost touching enzone and plied on and a WV player took the ball out of his hand running 99yd for a TD! That was impressive!
I thought of Nanny several times today, I really do miss her!
Kids were very good today, Charli watched Tangles as Ames slept then we plays on Nick Jr site coloring and playing games.
I still can't get my pictures off old computer yet :(

I finished up a set of calendars for Bobbie, today, that makes 30 pages so far this year, also I am using the guide in the back of my Bible and am up to Gen 11 reading through the year.
Had a very nice time with the babies today, held Ames most of the time :0)
Today would have been my Nanny's 94th birthday, she was wonderful, could look at something and make it. She quilted, crocheted, sewed, and was the best cook I ever knew. She also was serious in Bible study, she had an allergy to nylon so rarely made it to church but her Pastor Phillip came to the house for her and Aunt Doll. She loved Oral Roberts and is the one who let me borrow Corrie Ten Boone's book The Hiding Place. I spent a good bit of time with her. She made aprons and sold them to the women she worked with at the mill and was a cloth hoarder, LOL! I know I have a lot of her in me!

My Mom, Twila and Cody came over last night and we cooked a real southern meal, LOL. Fatback, gravy, biscuits cantaloupe, and I fixed some fordhook Lima beans. Growing up we had this often but would most likely have pork'n beans. Mama worked 9 to 6 and so meals needed to be quick. I was so tickled when Jeremy called from Washington State and said, "Mama, they don't have Fatback in these grocery stores!" I don't remember what he said they called it, side meat or something. It is funny to me to remember that as a kid we would not eat the rind so my Daddy ate ours, now that's my favorite part. Also, he liked the crust on cornbread and would eat ours.
The picture is just like I scanned it of my Nanny and me in 1964. She made the BEST cornbread! She used yellow corn meal, flour, buttermilk, eggs and a big spoon of mayonnaise and had a special square tin pan with a few dents to bake it in. Using that pan it was as pretty as a cake with no crust and was so light. I can't find the meal she used and mine never turned out like hers so I rarely make cornbread. I can't bake biscuits either. She had a bowl of flour like many southern women and would put the shortening and buttermilk in the bowl. I wonder what today's health officials would say about reusing the flour? Didn't hurt us!
I guess I will have to come up with something that Charli remembers me cooking. We have a cake walk at church tomorrow helping the Acteens raise money to send a missionary for school supplies in a part of the country they are really hurting. The Children's Church does do a local thing, too, but the Acteen's are doing a Rock a Thon and getting sponcers and then we have the cake walk. I am baking cookies called "Death by Chocolate" and will try to find a cute way to package them. I have some tins and baskets so I will do something cute.
Well that's another memory shared, Les is getting ready for work and I am going to check out a yard sale or two and go see Charli and get Gina to do my hair. I want layers because I sweat so badly in this humid heat my hair stays soaked. Gina says it is hormones and most older women complain of this. It makes me feel like my poor Nanny, she would have a rag to keep her face wiped. She had very thick hair and long and would wind it up on top of her head. She was a true Southern Woman (worked in the cotton mill, too.) The irony is her parents, the Maynards, came over from England in 1904 and since she was born January 4, 1917 she was first generation American!

I am so laughing as I post this picture! Zaroga got me thinking of family and my Papa and how he drank his coffee with Pet evaporated milk out of a saucer. He also put Pet milk in grits, that made them so creamy! That's my Dad with the Carolina shirt, you see he was a Die hard Clemson fan and I am a USC fan, I gave this shirt to him for Christmas and he gave me, my brother and my baby sister chicken bones and feathers! Needless to say Sissy switched to Clemson, she was only about 4! My Papa passed away the year after this, I think. My Uncle James was on a tractor, or bush hog and got into a hornet's nest several years ago and died there, I was never close to him. My Dad passed away Father's Dad 2006.
This is my Nanny, I wrote about her on the 4th, you can see the cloth scraps on the stool in front of her and my Aunt Doll and her dog Rusty. I got this picture from my Dad and it's a Polaroid and needs cleaned up.

Now what's up with this? Cashmere socks! I Love fun socks and Gina gave me this cashmere pair with some wonderful Shea Cashmere foot cream which smells so good! I Love these socks! they are so soft, I wish I could find another pair of shoes like my brown loafers! i got them about 5 years ago and they really show it! I do not like to buy shoes!!! I have very few for a woman and most of my tennis shoes are from Gina. She is like Mama and has a closet full. I remember counting Mama's once in the early 80's and I think it was 60 or so.

My birthday is coming up soon and I need a new watch so that's what Les is getting me but I also want a new Bible. That's a hard thing for me to choose!! I know I want a NKJ and a center column reference. Every one I find is at least $40 and the ones I really like are $60! I am getting to old to get much money for my BD, LOL! I hope I can get to the new Christian Book store in the mall in Greenville. They sell discounted Bibles there. I also can eat at Fuddrucker's my favorite!!

Today I dedicate this post to my Nanny, Evelyn Snowbird Maynard Cheek. She was born Jan. 4, 1917 and died when Gina was a young child. I really miss her, probably more than anyone I ever lost. She was a real Country Girl even though her parents moved here from England in 1902. Things I remember are her cornbread, her Chocolate cake with fudgey icing. How she let me use her scraps to make crafts, the quilts she made and her quilt rack hanging from the ceiling.
Her Laugh and how funny she was! Snuff (yuck!) And how she would take me to the Trash Dump where the mill tossed the things they threw away, she was a recycler! She had sheds with cloth she horded to make quilts. She had a cluttered house but I was comfortable there and spent so many nights with her and Papa.
But one of the biggest things I remember is this that country woman read her Bible, watched Oral Roberts and gave me my first Corrie Ten Boom book.
She also gave me one of my special treasures, a rhinestone set that my Daddy gave her when he was 15. I treasure it and hope that my precious Charli will one day. I got it when I was 15 and hope that I will be around to give it to her on her 15th birthday.
I am getting ready for church and need to help Les because we invited friends over for lunch.
